Senior year only happens once.
And the photos you take to mark this milestone — the last chapter before everything changes — deserve more than a rushed afternoon at a park with a camera pointed at you. They deserve an experience as extraordinary as this moment in your life.
As a luxury senior portrait photographer based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, I’ve built my entire approach around one belief: your senior photos should feel like an event, not an errand. From the first conversation to the moment your finished wall art is hanging in your home, every single detail is handled for you.
This guide walks you through exactly what that looks like — and why it makes all the difference.

The most important thing I can tell you: book during the summer between your junior and senior year.
Here’s why this matters. Most high schools in the Waukesha area — including Waukesha South, Waukesha North, Catholic Memorial, Brookfield Central, Mukwonago, and others throughout Waukesha County — have yearbook photo submission deadlines that fall between September and December of senior year. That window is much tighter than most families realize.
If you wait until senior year to start thinking about photos, you’re already behind. The best dates in July, August, and early September go to seniors who planned ahead. And more importantly, the full Kara Reese Photography experience — with the in-home styling consultation, coordinated outfits, and everything else I’ll describe below — takes time to do right.
Book in spring of junior year, or as soon as summer begins. You’ll have your pick of dates, your pick of locations, and all the time in the world to make it exceptional.
Most senior photo sessions in the Waukesha area work something like this: you show up, you smile, you get a gallery link a few weeks later. The whole thing feels a little transactional.
That is not what I do.
Every session I offer is a fully bespoke, white-glove experience — built entirely around you, handled entirely by me, and designed to be one of the most memorable days of your senior year.
Here’s what that actually looks like from start to finish.

A few weeks before your session, I come to you.
I’ll visit your home to walk through your wardrobe together and curate the perfect outfits for your session. This isn’t a checklist or a generic style guide — it’s a personalized conversation about who you are, what makes you feel most like yourself, and how we can build a visual story around that.
We’ll select outfits that not only look beautiful on their own, but that harmonize with each other and with the locations we choose. The colors, the textures, the overall mood — everything is considered together so that your gallery feels cohesive and intentional, not pieced together at the last minute.
This is one of the biggest reasons my clients’ photos look the way they do. We’re not hoping it all comes together on the day of the shoot. We’re designing it in advance.
Location selection is part of the styling consultation process. We choose locations that complement your outfits and your personality — not just wherever happens to be convenient.
The Waukesha area has a wealth of stunning backdrops to choose from:
Minooka Park offers meadows, wooded trails, a quarry lake, and rolling hills — one of the most versatile outdoor settings in all of Waukesha County.
Frame Park along the Fox River gives us soft reflections, manicured grounds, and that classic golden-light warmth that photographs so beautifully.
Downtown Waukesha is a hidden gem for seniors who want something with edge — brick facades, historic architecture, interesting textures, and urban energy.
Retzer Nature Center is breathtaking in season, with open prairie, wildflowers, and wide-open skies that produce dramatic, sweeping compositions.
Lapham Peak State Park in Delafield — just a short drive from Waukesha — offers wooded trails, an iconic observation tower, and some of the most stunning fall scenery in Waukesha County.
And if there’s a location that holds personal meaning — a family property, a field where you’ve always dreamed of being photographed, somewhere specific to your story — we’ll talk about it and make it work.
The goal is always locations that feel yours, not just pretty backdrops.

Every Kara Reese Photography senior session includes complimentary professional hair and makeup.
This is something I include because I believe you deserve to walk into your session already feeling your absolute best — not worried about whether your hair cooperated that morning or whether you applied your makeup correctly in the car.
A professional artist works with you before we ever pick up a camera. The result is a look that photographs beautifully, holds throughout the session, and still looks like you — elevated, but authentically you.
On the day of your session, I dedicate the entire day to you.
There’s no rushing. There’s no clock watching. There’s no sense that I have another client waiting or somewhere else I need to be. This day is yours — and I treat it that way.
We move through locations at a pace that feels natural. I’m directing you, laughing with you, keeping the energy light and the experience genuinely fun. Most seniors tell me they were nervous going in and didn’t want it to end.
We also love to incorporate family portraits when the timing is right. Senior year is one of the last times the whole family will be together under one roof before your senior heads off to college or wherever life takes them next. A few frames with mom and dad, or the whole family together, can become some of the most treasured images from the entire day. We just plan a little extra time into the session to make room for it.

After your session, my involvement doesn’t end with handing you a gallery link.
I handle the yearbook submission for you. Completely. You don’t have to figure out the school’s submission process, the file format requirements, the deadlines. I take care of it.
I also offer beautifully curated print products — heirloom-quality wall art, fine art albums, and gift prints for family members who will treasure them. I work with you to select the right images and the right products for your home and your family.
And then I deliver and install your wall art myself.
You don’t lift a finger. The artwork arrives hung, leveled, and ready to become part of your home. Many of my clients’ parents tell me that the finished wall piece is the first thing people notice when they walk through the door.
This is the part that most photographers don’t think about — and the part my clients’ families are often most grateful for. These images aren’t meant to sit in a digital folder. They’re meant to be lived with.

When is the right time to book? The summer between junior and senior year — ideally late spring or early summer before senior year begins. Yearbook deadlines at most Waukesha-area schools fall between September and December, so we need enough lead time to do this beautifully and without any stress.
What does the process look like from start to finish? We start with a consultation where I come to your home and we plan outfits and locations together. Then comes your session day — hair, makeup, and a full model-for-a-day experience. Afterward I handle your gallery, yearbook submission, and any print products, including delivery and installation of wall art. You’re taken care of at every step.
Is hair and makeup really included? Yes, always. Every session includes complimentary professional hair and makeup. It’s part of the experience.
Can we do family photos too? Absolutely — and I encourage it. Senior year is such a meaningful moment for the whole family. We build in time for a few family frames whenever clients want them.
What if it rains? Wisconsin weather is Wisconsin weather. If conditions are truly uncooperative, we reschedule. I’ll never rush a session or compromise the experience because of weather pressure.
Do you photograph guys? Of course. Senior photos are for every senior, and I work with guys regularly. The locations, the vibe, the whole session is tailored to feel authentic to you — never stiff or forced.
What areas do you serve? I’m based in Waukesha and serve the greater Waukesha County area, including Waukesha, Pewaukee, Brookfield, Menomonee Falls, Mukwonago, Delafield, Oconomowoc, New Berlin, Muskego, and the greater Milwaukee metro.
Senior year is one of those rare moments that families feel in their bones. The house is about to get quieter. The chair at the dinner table is about to be empty more often. And the kid who grew up in your home is about to go become whoever they’re going to be in the world.
These photos matter. Not just for the yearbook. Not just for the gram. But as a real, tangible, beautiful record of exactly who your senior was at this exact moment in their life.
I don’t take that responsibility lightly. And I don’t think you should settle for anything less than an experience that honors it.
